The police communications center is a busy and stressful place to be in. The Communications Officer must be able to multi-task, while trying to get information from a panicked caller.  They may need to dispatch police, fire, and EMS simultaneously as they continue to monitor radio traffic and requests from other personnel in the field that are still patrolling the community.  Communications Officers have the ability to give CPR instructions over the phone to a citizen rendering assistance to another person.  The position requires calm and focus in the face of chaos to handle emergency situations.

  

 

Other duties that are the responsibility of the Communications Officer:

 

 

Handling 911 calls

 

Monitoring NCIC teletypes then acting on those that need immediate attention and forwarding others to appropriate personnel. 

 

Provide emergency life saving instructions over the phone. 

 

Be a source of information for police officers, detectives and public.

 

Maintain various logs and records specific to their duties.

 

Monitor security cameras.
