Homeowner Covid Relief

N.J. homeowners behind on mortgage payments can apply for $35K in emergency COVID relief

Certain New Jerseyans in need of emergency mortgage relief because of the coronavirus pandemic will soon be eligible to apply for up to $35,000 in aid, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Monday. The money will come from $325 million in federal money as part of the American Rescue Plan. Registration to apply for the money will begin on Feb. 8. “Under this new program, eligible homeowners can receive up to $35,000 to cover mortgage arrearages, delinquent property taxes, and other housing cost delinquencies for those who were negatively impacted by the pandemic,” Murphy said during his latest COVID-19 briefing in Trenton. “This can help protect thousands of homeowners from foreclosures and neighborhoods from being impacted,” he added.

According to the state, to qualify for the program homeowners must meet the following requirements:

Be a New Jersey homeowner with a demonstrated COVID-19-related financial hardship occurring after January 20, 2020.

Own and occupy an eligible primary residence.

Have an income below 150% of their Area Median Income.
